My sister, Leyla Davis, likes to draw. She took up a basic 101 Art Foundations course and applied what she learned to a series of paintings - one of them being this piece above. I cannot express enough how amazing this made me feel today, on my birthday. And it's not because she painted one of my self portraits, but because she choose to express herself in a way I didn't know she could.

Wow.

Leyla, I am so proud of you and of this. And thank you so much. This means everything to me. More than I can truly express.

Honorable Mention in "Artists Wanted" Contest!

When I entered this international self portraiture contest, I did not know what to expect. New to photo competitions, it was actually a lot of fun to apply and openly show support to all my talented flickr girls who also entered. To be honest, winning the grand prize was not that important to me. I mean, don't get me wrong, I definitely wouldn't be mad if I won 7K! However, I wanted to venture into something different to see what would happen. To this moment, seeing my name (or rather "alter ego" Ms. Aarika) listed as an "Honorable Mention" among other respected professional photographers in a international photo competition, blows me away! I can't help but to reflect on this time last year as I was preparing for my first full art show in my hometown of Atlantic City. I'm extremely grateful to God and very proud.

I want to also take this time to congratulate all the winners, especially Hilary McHone, Brooke Shaden and Lisa Sieczka, who I've connected with personally. Keep shooting and inspiring ladies!

Looking forward to hopefully meeting everyone at the "The Power Of Self" reception Friday, March 12th at 201 Mulberry St in Manhattan, NYC!

The above pic is of my beautiful prima, Shanta Covington! First, I'd like to thank good 'ole twitter for bringing us together again in the past couple months and much closer than we've ever been in our lives - before our photo session, the last time we saw each other was at Mom-Mom's going home service. That was 3 yrs ago. By the way Shan, Mom-Mom would be so happy that we did this. She loved you so much. :) Anyway, I was SO excited to work with her, and as instructed, she came well rested and worry-free. She worked it out! Second, thank you Gia for coming to style and "beat face." lol God bless that circa scarf! You're one of my most stylist girlfriends. I knew you'd come with the goods. And lastly, thanks to Weldon in Atlantic City who saw me struggling with my camera equipment to the bus terminal, thanks for dragging my studio - I didn't miss my bus trip to NYC because of your help! Thank God.

Aside from these images, there's a creative concept I also shot that same day. I have yet to find a space to do the separate additional shooting necessary for it. Ugh! Once it's done, I'll post if everything turns out the way I've imagined it in my mind.

Okay, I got a direct message via twitter about this contest, then my girl Jovian (blog--> http://jovianzayne.wordpress.com) sent it just a couple days after, so I thought I'd give my chances at winning something cool a shot. After many failed attempts at setting up an account (ended with "Iamthegreatest" because site wouldn't take "msaarika" or "nastassiadavis") I FINALLY got my stuff in. It costed me $50, as it was $10 to submit an image, so I chose what I thought was "my best work" to date - 3 or more is recommended by the site. Whether I win or not, I'm just happy that I followed through and actually entered.

Confidence. It's something that many of us, especially young girls, do not have today and is incredibly important to our overall well-being. Stereo Crowd Shoot (NY)

Last week, I did a photo shoot for "Stereo Crowd" in Queens, NY. I've been up on these guys for a minute since seeing them live at The East Harlem Riviera last year. It definitely felt great reconnecting, meeting new band members and the photo experience in general was so much fun! Everyone was so patient and took my direction wonderfully. I'd only done the lighting technique on myself alone at home with a self timer, so I wasn't sure what would come from this session. We began shooting around 11pm and finished around 3am. No make-up artists, stylists or photo assistants on set, just Stereo Crowd, my camera, light and me. Gracias books, chairs ladders (and Stereo Crowd!) for helping to keep my camera steady since I didn't have a tripod. (And a special gracias to my buddy LA photog Jon Genius for the light he left behind. I used it on Chavon! :~)

Blackface in 2009 Fashion Shoots

The "Blackface" French Vogue photoshoot featuring Dutch model Lara Stone released this month is getting tons of negative response from the American media and black community. Although, I completely understand where the outrage is coming from, I'd have to say I do not agree with most of the negative feedback this spread is getting. Yes, I am a Black-American woman who knows very well about the history of "Black Face" but from an artist's point of view who loves the art of "the pretend" and "the imitation" I can appreciate this. Plus, it's not "Black Face" in the historical or tradition sense where 1) a white person’s face is painted black because societal restrictions prevent a black person from taking the role and 2) it’s not done in mockery, or degrading way as to make fun of a black person (like black actor's in "Gone With The Wind", "Stepin Fechit" etc). The model looks regal and beautiful posing as close to a black woman as she possible can. Because let's be honest, if you weren't told that this model was white, more than likely, you'd pass it as another high end fashion photo shoot. (I don't like the face and angle on the first one sitting down, just for the record.)

How is this conceptual shoot any different then playing "make-believe" and transforming a model into someone or something else other than she? That's what fashion shoots are all about - telling a story. Then some ask, "Well, why not use a real black model?" I do not believe it was ever about using a real black woman to begin with, but more about how can the creative team pull off evolving a model into looking like something completely opposite. It's ultimately about the "make-believe", about the "dress-up" in the most challenging way possible. It's also showcasing how extremely gifted the makeup artist, stylist and the photographer are by coming close to the real thing. Have we forgotten the ultimate form of flattery? To "copy" or "imitate" (in good taste, no matter what the subject) has always and will always be the greatest form of that.

However, the only thing that the magazine editor failed to do was actually included authentic Black/African models in this issue! Now the media can and has every right to really turn what I'm sure was originally a creative and fun idea into a racist situation. How you doing a tribute to Black beauty, but not show authentic black models throughout the magazine? Can we say hypocrites?

Tyra Bank's ANTM is also being criticized for using Blackface recently (although she's done this concept already a few seasons back turning black, white and latina models into Geishas.) So what's the big deal turning now? Turning white and asian models into African beauties is wrong now? Absolutely not! It's a genius idea and a great way to show diversity across the board of races. The natural skin color of a model shouldn't matter, because she's simply a canvas for the make-up, clothing and hair styling anyway. If anything, the complaining and close-mindedness of these people opposing it shows the true ignorance and racist attitudes that still lives today. Also, I object to ANTM's beautiful works of art being group in that same disgusting category of "The Jackson Jive" minstrel skit on an Australian Variety Show last week. Those 5 men smiling, dancing and laughing about like baffoons in tar-black face paint was so painful to view. (Much love and thanks to Harry Connick Jr. for speaking out!)

Tyra, THANK YOU for pushing the envelope by blurring and questioning the lines of race with these amazing new ANTM photos! Love them.

So let's celebrate! Black is the new Black.

I love me some MJ (as most of you know), so the concept in these next set of photos shouldn't come as a surprise. Michael Jackson's estate released the much anticipated un-released song "This Is It" in preparation for the movie coming out next week. So to celebrate The Late Great Michael Jackson and the beauty of this new song (Mike actually recorded this around "Thriller". FYI), I decided to create these pictures using the same technique I did on the photos I shot last year here with the ones you see below. The blurs on the face are nice to a degree, but after staring at them for a while, I'm ready to see clear facial features.

My Dad saved this page for me from today's AC Press. I remember being so upset in 2001 when I read after the fact that Michael Jackson was in Pleasantville (town 5 mins away from Atlantic City) recording music with local producer Rodney Jerkins for the "Invincible" album. Feels like yesterday when I was shocked knowing MJ was sooo close and no one knew it. He just crept in for a week, and nicely crept right on out.

At the time, I remember thinking "Aww, that's ok. I'll get my chance."

Whenever I see this man speak, it brings me so much joy. Man, I'm happy to be alive today witnessing such extraordinary history. To think 100 years ago, we were slaves in this country with no civil rights. We've come so far... I feel that I can never thank all those who fought and died for my freedom today enough...

Forever grateful.

“They might think they’ve got a pretty jump shot or a pretty good flow,” Mr. Obama said, “but our kids can’t all aspire to be LeBron or Lil Wayne. Michael's Final Curtain Call - ("Smile" for the King)

Today, the world saw The Legendary Michael Jackson's funeral and memorial service on television. According to the BBC, a record number of 2.5 billion watched. Words cannot express how I felt seeing his shiny gold casket on stage while phenomenal artist like Stevie Wonder, John Mayer, Jennifer Hudson, Usher, Queen Latifah, Mariah Cary and others paid beautiful tribute to Michael Jackson. As an artist, humanitarian and philanthropist, he's done so much. It's how I feel artist who are blessed with his influence and money should really act and give back. Not only did he achieved the American Dream, but the Global Dream! How can we ever forget you Michael? It's impossible to and as Stevie Wonder said at the service today, "As much as we need you here Michael, God must need you far more."

You're gone too soon, but Lord knows you are truly in a better place.

My deepest sympathy and prayers go out to The Jackson family and his three children. With God's strength, you will get through.

In closing, I'd like to post a beautiful rendition of the song "Smile" by Janelle Monae. If you've been to this blog or my flickr before, then you are well aware of my support and love for this girl's art. However, if you haven't heard it, please take a listen today. Originally recorded by Charlie Chaplin, then Michael himself, it was his favorite song. Jermaine, Michael's brother, also sang it at the Memorial Service today.

The Day The Earth Stood Still (Harlem Remembers MJ)

When my children ask me one day where I was when Michael Jackson passed away, I'll tell them this:

I had just come home from being out with my mom and sister. My dad was upstairs in his room watching CNN and asked us if we had heard about Michael Jackson being rushed to the hospital. I said "No..." and quickly turned my attention to the tv. I was thinking "First Ed McMahon...Then Farrah Fawcett this morning...and now...Oh God...please not Michael" My dad said "Well you know they say death comes in 3's"...I couldn't believe what I was hearing and just knew that Michael would be alright. We all sat there and waited...I got calls from my friends Michael and Gia as we kept going back and forth over the phone lines just waiting to hear good news.

I immediately turned on my mac to see what Twitter was saying..."RIP MICHAEL JACKSON" was the trending topic, and I couldn't believe what I was seeing. TMZ had already announced it, but I didn't want to believe such a gossip news channel. Then about 15 minutes later, MSNBC and CNN stated the very unthinkable thing that I could ever imagine:

"MICHEAL JACKSON DEAD AT 50"

Silence.
Disbelief.
Devastation.

All jumbled together. I became so overwhelmed that I couldn't help but start to cry as if the news was talking about a family member of my own.

Michael Jackson's dead?? I kept repeating.

It almost felt like a terrible dream that I wanted someone to wake me from.

Days later, still in shock, I knew I didn't want to be in Atlantic City where no one was really remembering or reacting to MJ's passing in the way I wanted to see.

I knew I had to go to NY.

This is what my eyes saw that day...

Michael Jackson's music was a huge part of my childhood and life in general. I was born the same year and month he showcased his famous "moonwalk" dance. When my dad use to make home videos, I remember seeing one where my sister and I (around 8 and 9 yrs old) were dancing in a dim living room to "Thriller". In the video, my sister was dancing so hard she ended up falling down and spraining her ankle! Never forget that.

I remember loving Michael Jackson so much as a kid, thinking he was so incredibly talented and so very handsome. Everyday since his tragic passing on June 25th, I wake up hearing his music playing in my parents room and I'm reminded he's not here anymore. It's such a surreal thing. Never thought I'd see "RIP" next to Michael Jackson's name so soon in my life. Although he was photographed looking very troubled and often ill over the past few years, I just always thought he'd be around. Seeing younger pictures of him now make me want to cry knowing we had such an iconic figure on this earth, someone who bought so much happiness to many people around the world, and now he's left in our hearts and the history books. Forever.

His music will live on until the end of time. And I feel privileged knowing he lived in my lifetime.

Rest In Peace at last Michael. How you made people of all races across the globe and expanding generations feel so good will forever be remembered.

Last Friday, I had an awesome photo exhibition in Atlantic City, NJ. So many people came, including Mayor Langford and the groups who gave me past art scholarships for college (Children's cultural foundation and Atlantic City Links). A huge shout out to Kaleem Shabazz, the art director who did a fabulous job organizing the event that night. Located at The Garden Pier on New Jersey Ave and The Boardwalk, My photos are on display for the whole month of March in honor of Women's Month. So if you're in the area, go check it out!

Photo Shoot with B Scott!

I had the opportunity to work with B Scott a couple weeks ago at Dex Studios in NYC! Such an awesome individual. Don't know who he is? Check out his official website and youtube channel. Trust me, he's someone you won't forget. Personally, I discovered B via Concreteloop about a year ago and I'm glad we finally got the chance to work together. He's super funny, got a zest for life and definitely an inspiration to many people.

Also, the other talents on set were incredibly great to work with: Mecca (PR), Chanda Renee (Fashion Stylist), Jasele (Hairstylist), Carmouche and Catalina (MUA). So thankful for such a hard working team. We had lots and lots of fun.

The Day of All Days (Braving the freeze for Obama)

I will never forget January 20, 2009. Nothing can truly sum up the emotions I felt on the day Senator Barack Obama was sworn in as our 44th President of the United States of America. I can tell my children that I was there, and brings the biggest smile to my face. We (my sister, her boyfriend and his friends) got up at 5am and made it over to the capital by 6am. It was freezing, the subways were packed, but it was all worth it.

Here are my pics from that amazing day...just a little something. I tried to get as much as I could. It was SO cold!

Looking for a roommate!

I really want to move to NYC. For months now, it's been one of the things heavily on my mind. A little while back, I had a chat with Jovian and George about what it means to take chances in life - not waiting to "be comfortable" when taking the next steps into our future. So, I feel the time is now. And what does the above photo have to do with that? Well, her name is Penny and she was an old roommate of mine when I lived in Montclair. This image was from the one and only photo session we ever had.

It's not a very popular one on flickr, but I've personally always loved this portrait...the mood, style, her expression, just everything. In future fashion/ beauty shoots, I really want to push the envelope by trying new ideas and concepts. I'm excited about shooting with a high school friend of mine who is starting to get into modeling now. We'll be playing and shooting with a lot of those ideas very soon.

I'll be keeping everyone updated. =)

Rosa (Parks) the Riveter! was printed in a leading U.K. newspaper, the Guardian today! I was pleasantly informed by a nice English lady on flickr who took the photo of the clipping and sent to me. Although, I didn't give this paper permission to publish my picture, I'm more excited that it was chosen out of hundreds that were submitted. =)

Real change comes to America! What it means to me.

If one asked me how I felt about this historical moment of Barack Obama being elected as our 44th President, I'd say that we, as Americans, are done with the divide and conquer techniques that have been used on the electorate for over the past 221 years. The William Lynch tactics of long ago have been exposed and the majority of Americans have rejected it's purpose. Electing Barack Obama is showing that we, as an American people, have decided to finally come together in unity and fight with common goals for a country that is truly the best place to grow up and live in.

It excites me knowing there is a new day, a new era dawning upon all of us that will light a better future for our children, and theirs. This also can mean a fair shot is given to those who truly deserve it. A larger pool has been created to pick the best of the best regardless of race, color, or creed.

The feeling is indescribable when I think of Obama as our President-Elect. Days after the election, I still wake up overjoyed just thinking about his victory with Michelle by his side and little Sasha and Malia having a new front lawn to play on. It only saddens me to know that my dear Mom-Mom and Nana Sampson couldn't be here to witness it on earth. I know they're watching and smiling down from above.

For my own personal reflection, I really feel Obama's win has also changed me for the better. It's pushing me harder to see one of my own dreams come to fruition - seeing my photos in a major magazine someday!

There's much to be done! And I'm ready to work.

p.s. Below are photos from election day. I asked my sister to snap the ones of me getting ready to make a difference. I wanted to get photos of the expected "voting lines" as well, but there were none. Hey, it was 6.30am and I'm living in a rather small town - Atlantic City.

A few months ago, I introduced you to a talented young guy who puts on an incredible one man show in NY. I briefly wrote about my experience and posted photos of his 6 amazing different characters. After stumbling across my "In the Kitchen" photo, George wanted me to create something similar using the characters of "Any1Man." In early September, we immediately got together and made it happen.

On the morning of the shoot, I walk in on George getting into character. As he's reciting lines, it's like I'm back in the theater watching him on stage for the very first time. Can you guess who he is?

Inspiration (What a way to brighten my day =)

I belong to a small community of artist/photographers on Flickr where I've been sharing my images for over three years now. A very talented artist, who goes by the screen name Absoluv, sent me a link to one of his recent artworks that was inspired by a self portrait of mine! He based out of England and is extremely talented to say the least. It's a work in progress, but I already love what he's begun.

May I also add that God is amazing? The older I become, the more I see this in everything I do. God knows just when to brighten the spirit in our most depressing hour. Personally, I wasn't feeling up to par today. At work, all day yesterday, my mind was elsewhere. I kept making mistakes at the cash register, running clothes to the floor at a slow pace, had little to no help in the fitting room - so clothes were just piling up to the ceiling, and then to top it off, I didn't lock the store's main door at closing which could have resulted in cops and security being called to the scene. Like, I really need to get it together. If you ask what's bothering me, I'll tell you that I've been employed with H&M since July, and am suddenly noticing my original excitement is quickly fading. I simply don't want to be there. I sometimes feel that I didn't get a Fine Art degree from college to become a sales associate at a clothing retail store. Yet when I start to feel myself complaining, I remind myself why I first started working there - 1)steady income and 2)to work my way up and get the opportunity to shoot their fashion ads someday. All I keep thinking about is my photography and wanting to shoot, but H&M sucks up a lot of my energy. I just really need to get it together and stay focused. I trust that God's going to work it out in due time.

Janelle Monáe returns to Highline Ballroom

Hello all! It's been a while; I'm still alive. Just been working like crazy. This post is long over due, but I've decided to keep up with this blog as often as possible, no matter what. A couple weeks back I traveled to NYC to catch JM and the W.A.S at the Highline Ballroom again. This time she came back with Raphael Saadiq. (Unfortunately, there are no shots of him. =( They just finished the first official tour for "Metropolis: The Chase" (which is still available for purchase on iTunes and music retail stores now. Shame on you if you haven't coped it. Do it today. =) As it is always, it was great seeing the gang again. Got inside the show a little late due to circumstances I had no control over, so didn't get as many shots of the performance as I'd like to.

So there a go, just a little laste of what I saw.

And did I mention to get Metropolis: The Chase? Yea, do that. It's in stores now!

This here is my high school Drama Guild girlfriend, Karine Hyman. We both played "Auntie Em" in our school's production of "The Wiz" years ago and it's so amazing to see those you knew growing up still pursuing their dreams! We had a photo session before she left for Israel a few months back, and she's now landed a super cool gig playing "Murphy's" mommy in this very official film commercial! This is so incredibly awesome and I'm beyond estatic for her success! CONGRATULATIONS Karine!!! Wishing you many more AMAZING roles as a working actress in Israel!

The Main Event

I LOVE ice cream, but who doesn't really? Well, "The Main Event" is thee spot for all our ice cream needs where I live. We got in the car and drove a good fifteen minutes to find that the expected long line of 8-10 people was only down to 1 person! So running to the window like a kid in a candy store, I eagerly ordered my medium "mixed cone" - no sprinkles. And, my oh my, was it delightful. If only I could share some with you, then is when you'd truly understand.

Kaput goes the lens!

A couple days ago, a very unfortunate thing happened. I was in the midst of creating more self portraits, but decided I needed a quick snack - so off to the fridge I go. Right as I'm taking a mouth full of ma's leftover spaghetti (which was BANGING might I add), I hear a loud *THUNK upstairs. Hmm. Just assuming my sis had a nasty fall or something, I didn't think much of it. Well, she sure did and it was right on my bloody camera! When I returned upstairs to find my 30D turned upside-down on the carpet, I quickly grabbed it and began snapping away to see if any serious damage had been done. "Great." I thought. My baby was making blurry pictures on the auto-focus setting one after the other and there's was nothing I could do about it. Frustrated and broke -both literally and emotionally - I just sat there wondering where do I go from here...I'm still weighing out my options. This is certainly the last thing I need right now*sigh* ... as he always does, I trust God will make a way somehow.

Fast-forward to the following day, I'm cleaning up our kitchen and have this sudden urge to document it of course. Although one lens goes kaput, there is another one I have which is wider and actually works better for this particular project.

So here I be -

lol.

Now back to figuring out what to do about lens numero uno...

Alright, signing off. First day on the new part-time job tomorrow morn.

New Selfies!

For the newcomers, I started my "digital photography" taking self portraits in my college dorm bathroom. Yeah, I know. Sounds kinda funky, but trust me - the lighting is almost always perfect! (Ah! Just thinking about it brings tears to my eyes.) Well anyway, here are my latest creations. Slightly different from what I've done in the past, and that's why I'm really pleased to say the least! It's all the same photo edited differently for the exception of the last two.

So what do you think? Hm?

I'm trying to envision coming here not being able to hug you, kiss you and tell you that I love you. Listening closely, I can still hear you calling "Nay Nay" from the other room. Anxiously running into the kitchen, I plop down in the chair and quietly watch you mix the batter of your famous pound cake. You give me a little taste from your finger and I'd smile saying "Mom-Mom, you make the best birthday cake ever!" Then you'd say "You know why Nay-Nay? It's 'cause I'm your grandma. And don't you ever forget it!" I'd laugh as the cake mixer drummed on."

It's been a whole year and I know your smiling down on all of us!

We miss you dearly. I love you always.

I've already seen this show twice and plan to see it once more before it comes to an end in a few weeks. Remembering back in December when the W.A.S. officially endorsed "ANY1MAN", I knew I was in for a special treat. George effortlessly portrays these characters with such conviction, it's enough to put a smile on your face, bust out in laughter or in more serious moments, quietly say "Ahem". All the characters are so necessary, but I think my favs are Willie, Wesley and most definitely Bishop. (Oh my goodness...pure comedy.)

I recommend ANYONE and EVERYONE to go see this incredible one man stage show. It's ONLY running for the month of JUNE on Mondays and Wednesdays at the Repertory Theater on 13th Street in NY. =( So please don't miss it! - www.ANY1MAN.com
